More Gardening!

Today (Saturday) I rode the ferry boat into town and back. It's much better for carrying bags and boxes than a crowded bus. Yesterday the guys dug and tilled my vegetable garden plot! So today I got about a dozen more plants - and many seed packets - to set out. It took a few hours to get them in the ground, but was good exercise.

Last weekend I purchased a hoe, rake, 50 pounds of organic fertilizer and a couple dozen herb plants. Four hours later I had the upper garden cleared of many weeds and rocks and put in about a half-dozen each of: lavender, sage, chives, English thyme, cilantro, and oregano. There is already a nice little rosemary bush. Today I added a half-dozen basil plants too.

As for vegetables, I've set out about a half-dozen of:
two kinds of tomato plants, red leaf lettuce, a lettuce greens mix, green bell peppers, and red peppers. Also a row of radishes, a row of carrots, and two rows of beets. I put in about a half-dozen: cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage plants.

Tomorrow I'll finish planting rows of pumpkin, two kinds of squash, and two kinds of cucumbers. Even with all that in the ground I'll have a section of the vegetable garden open, but I'm sure I'll find SOMETHING more to add soon.

The lower garden is between two banana groves so I was concerned about the vegetables getting enough light. In fact, the tall Jamacian banana trees on the west side do cause some scattered afternoon shade; but I think they'll get plenty of good strong sunlight from the south each day so a little shade will be okay. Given some of the gardens I've had in the past with less access to sun or more severe growing climates, I expect these plants to do very well indeed!

Soon I'll have fresh salads and herbs for my table, and to share w/ folks at work! There will be much more than this one guy can consume!

Sounds very cool! I've thought about doing an herb garden for years, just never have. Just think, the more you grow, the less you have to worry about carrying on a bus or a ferry.

Mmmm, fresh veggies and herbs!! Now you have to learn how to make pasta from scratch. :) I think you ought to plant more tomatoes - you can never have enough tomatoes! Just no eggplant or zucchini - blech!
