Bermuda SKINK and other such critters ...
Very few critters are on the roam here ... insects - yes, and there will probably be even more of them as it warms. Recently I learned of the endangered "Bermuda skink" ... it is a lizard, or lizard's cousin. The skink is a gardener's friend, so we are asked to be their friend in return. They eat insects! Skinks are one of the few of anything considered 'indigenous' and being decimated by cats and kiskadees (these birds have a bright yellow belly and are everywhere with their 'kis-ka-dee' call). Gardeners are encouraged to build little 'rockeries' so skinks will have shelter.
When I first moved in here I asked locals about rabbits or squirrels -- not having seen any in trees or running across open ground -- only to find there are none. No racoons, skunks, possums, or other little wildlife like that. Certainly there are no deer or anything big. Yes indeed, a very interesing place!
