GALE Warning

Okay, so I'm not exactly sure about this ... GALE WARNING ... so what exactly does that mean? Yeah, I get it if you're on a little boat in the harbour it's time to tie up to the dock or drop anchor or something. I've seen people closing shutters. (Most houses here have full length window shutters that aren't 'ornamental' but quite functional.) I understood these were used if going off-island for a while or in case of hurricanes. I guess I need to figure just how close "gale" is to "hurricane". Oh, just Sooooo much to learn living here! It's a challenge, but I guess as long as I HAVE these nice white shutters, maybe I'll CLOSE them and be snug as can be tonight!

Cold, cold weather

Mid-March is here and I'm feeling what the locals have been describing to me as WINTER. I know for you Boston and Colorado friends dropping suddenly in the past 24 hours to low 50s doesn't seem cold, but IT IS. The wind is blowing, the rain sheets down in horizontal torrents - and a chill seeps through the air like in a good mystery novel. Highs today were in the low 60s, so you know we're talking SERIOUS COLD weather here! I posted before about Rattling Windows, so combine that scene with the fact that I have no heat. I could have a small electric room heater, but the "winter" has been so mild that I didn't need one; alas.

Well, there is some good news among all this bleakness. The garden is blooming --literally -- and growing faster than I can imagine. The bananas are just ripening and I suspect the next few months will be non-stop bunches of munches. There are so many loquats I can't pick them all, and I'd get a tummy-ache if I dared eat more than I already chomp. In fact, other than the weather ... all seems to be going quite well :) but somehow that is less-than-surprising given what I've experienced here so far.
